Care Labels for Sequin and Bead Embroidery: What to Test Before Production

Can this sequin or bead embroidery be washed, cleaned or pressed? A useful answer needs more than the name of the decoration. For a garment project, care instructions should follow an evaluation of the actual materials and construction. Start that discussion while sampling, before the care label is finalised.
Evaluate the complete article, including decoration
GINETEX explains care labelling in relation to the textile article, including finishes, accessories and applications. This means the body fabric’s care information alone may not settle the care conditions for a garment that also contains embroidery, lining, beads, sequins and other attachments.
Record the proposed material combination and ask suppliers for relevant care information. Keep that information tied to the selected material and version. A recommendation for an undecorated base or a different bead style should not be transferred to the whole garment without review.

Define the question before selecting an evaluation
Ask the garment team which care process it proposes to put on the label, then discuss the evaluation required for that process with a suitable testing provider. Intertek’s care-labelling service describes evaluation of factors such as colourfastness, dimensions and appearance in relation to cleaning and care.
The purpose is to determine suitable instructions for the actual article. This guide does not prescribe a universal temperature, detergent, dry-cleaning method or ironing setting. It also does not mean that an All4Lace product has already passed a particular test.

Build a record that makes the result usable
Identify the sample, assembly and proposed process before evaluation. Photograph and record the relevant condition beforehand, then review against the agreed criteria afterwards. Include any details that could affect the conclusion, such as lining or an attachment method.
The following are review questions to discuss when preparing the evaluation brief. They are not substitutes for a test method or a laboratory report.
| Area | Record before evaluation | Question after evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Colour and decoration surface | Colours, finish and reference photographs | Is there a change in colour, transfer or surface appearance? |
| Shape and dimensions | Agreed measurement points and sample dimensions | Has the shape or measured size changed? |
| Attachments and assembly | Sequin or bead connections, seams and lining | Have appearance or attachment conditions changed? |
| Overall garment appearance | The complete representative combination | Is the result acceptable against the agreed project criteria? |
Revisit the conclusion when the product changes
A care decision should refer to the evaluated combination, not just the flower design or catalogue category. If a supplier proposes a different sequin finish, thread, lining or attachment construction, ask whether the previous evaluation still applies. Keep the change and review decision in the sample record.
Final label wording and any market-specific requirements should be checked by the responsible garment team and relevant specialists. When the proposed process is not yet supported, keep the care instruction unresolved rather than filling the gap with a generic recommendation.
Questions to include in your sample request
Bring the care discussion into the sampling brief so that it does not appear for the first time at bulk dispatch. A fabric swatch may be enough for some material checks; the required evaluation may also need a representative assembled article. Confirm the sample scope with the team conducting the evaluation.
- Which exact materials and product version are being reviewed?
- What care information is available for each component?
- What proposed process and acceptance criteria will be evaluated?
- Does the sample represent the intended garment assembly?
- Who will review the result and approve the final care instruction?
